3 positions we’d like to see the Dallas Cowboys upgrade this summer

3 min read

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the most talented rosters in the entire NFL. Unfortunately, that hasn’t resulted in much playoff success over the past few seasons.

In fact, just last year, the Cowboys posted a disappointing 6-10 record. But that was mostly due to injuries at key positions, a lack of quality depth, underwhelming coaching and play.

This offseason the Cowboys went about the business of improving their roster. With the signing of a slew of modest free agents and an injection of youth from a massive draft class Dallas is hoping to avoid the pitfalls that landed them third in the NFC East last season.

Despite their recent efforts, the team has a few positions that could use an upgrade this summer. Here are our choices for the top three …

Safety

The position of safety has traditionally been under invested in by the Cowboys with numerous former sixth-round picks efforting to become average NFL starters. That disappointing trend has continued into the 2021 season. In April‘s draft, the team refused to use any of their 11 picks on a traditional safety.

Instead, the Cowboys have laid their safety hopes at the feet of veteran Damontae Kazee, a free agent signed from the Atlanta Falcons this offseason who is coming off an Achilles injury the limited him to only four games in 2020.

Dallas is also hoping for the further development of third-year safety Donovan Wilson, another in a long line of former sixth rounders. Kazee and Wilson are the Cowboys’ projected starters when the regular season kicks off.

We’d love to see the Cowboys upgrade the position with an experienced player who could come in and instantly challenge for a starting role.

Center

It appears that the starting role at center is being handed to Tyler Biadasz on a silver platter. That’s despite the 2020 fourth rounder starting just four games as a rookie, only one of which featured starting quarterback Dak Prescott under center.

Outside of seventh round rookie Matt Farniok, Biadasz has no real challenger for the starting center spot in Dallas this summer. We’d love to see that change with the team bringing in a player talented enough to really compete for the job.

Quarterback

This one is a no-brainer. The Cowboys have been trying to find some more experience to add behind Prescott on the depth chart but have yet to sign anyone.

It seems very likely that Dallas will enter training camp with the inexperienced trio of Cooper Rush, Ben DiNucci, and Garrett Gilbert. All of whom have a total of two NFL starts between them and did so just last season.

We’d love to see the Cowboys bring in a more experienced hand that instills hope within the fanbase that the team can actually win games if Prescott once again goes down with a season-ending injury. Something similar to what Dallas did last year when they signed Andy Dalton to a modest one-year deal.
