Giants select Jaylen Waddle in latest Mel Kiper Jr. mock draft

2 min read

The NFL mocks drafts are in overdrive and getting monotonous with the draft still a few weeks away. But when the original draftnik himself, Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN, chimes in, it’s always relevant to report on his forecast.

Kiper’s latest mock has several trades shaking up the order in Round 1, with the most interesting one being the Dallas Cowboys trading out of the No. 10 spot with New England, who take Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

The top players still on the board when the New York Giants are on the clock at No. 11 are Alabama wideout Jaylen Waddle, Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II and Northwestern offensive lineman Rashawn Slater.

Kiper believes the Giants won’t be able to resist the home-run hitting element that Waddle would bring to East Rutherford.

This is an important season for quarterback Daniel Jones. Can he take a Josh Allen-esque leap in Year 3? To do so, he has to get better pass-catchers around him. That started with the Giants adding top wideout Kenny Golladay in free agency, and Waddle would give them the draft’s best deep threat, a speedy playmaker who will also make an impact in the return game. I thought about edge rusher here as well.

In Round 2, Kiper Jr. has the Giants taking Oklahoma edge rusher Ronnie Perkins.

Pass-rusher is the Giants’ No. 1 need, and they have to take one here if they go another route with the No. 11 pick. Perkins is a fit as an outside linebacker in their 3-4 defense. He’s a physical edge rusher who had 16.5 sacks in three seasons at Oklahoma. He bullied offensive tackles at times.

The addition of Waddle would be a dynamic move for the Giants. Now, they must try to find a dynamic play caller in order to take advantage of the plethora of weapons they’ve surrounded Daniel Jones with. Last time I checked, there’s still only one football allowed on the field at a time, so this could be a pick that could also blow up in their face.
