Sandro Platzgummer will wear Austrian flag decal during preseason

2 min read

New York Giants running back Sandro Platzgummer will be allowed to don the flag of his native Austria on his helmet during the preseason this year.

Platzgummer is in his second season with the Giants as a member of the IPP (International Player Pathway). He spent last year with the Giants on the practice squad. He was recently cleared to practice after being removed from the Non-Football Injury list where was placed due to a hamstring issue.

The 6-foot, 198-pound Platzgummer is one of seven running backs in camp this month along with Saquon Barkley, Devontae Booker, Corey Clement, Eli Penny, Mike Weber and rookie Gary Brightwell. The Giants are also carrying fullback Cullen Gillaspia.

Platzgummer’s odds of making the Giants’ 53-man roster are slim, but they will grow in his favor if Barkley, who is coming off major knee surgery and is not participating in team drills yet at camp, is not ready to start the season on the active roster.

Also, the Giants are reportedly bringing back veteran Alfred Morris as insurance if Barkley’s rehab gets extended.
